As Part of the Inaugural National Cancer Prevention and Early Detection Month, today the Biden Cancer Moonshot announced new actions to strengthen preventive cancer care and expand accessibility of cancer screenings; recognizing Teen Cancer America and Breaking Cancer News for its new “Prevent and Detect” series.
Prevent and Detect is a special weekly series in Breaking Cancer News focused on the latest advances in prevention and early detection. The series is designed to help more communities advocate for health improvement, cancer screening, and best early treatment options to improve outcomes and survival.
“Teen Cancer America is proud to support President Biden’s Cancer Moonshot Prevention and Early Detection initiative,” said Simon Davies, Executive Director of Teen Cancer America. “Our magazine, Breaking Cancer News, is launching a ‘Prevent and Detect’ series, featuring the hottest new scientific research and innovations in the field. We support the Cancer Moonshot’s commitment to expanding access to cancer screenings, preventing more cancers before they start, and driving new innovation to deliver the latest progress to young cancer patients, families, and communities across America to improve health outcomes.”
This week, the Prevent and Detect series examined The National Cancer Institute’s Innovative Concept Award, which recognizes highly innovative and out-of-the-box technologies with the potential to create new scientific paradigms through novel and enhanced approaches to considerably improve cancer prevention, detection, and treatment for pediatric and/or rare cancers.

“Prevention and detection is core to our mission at Breaking Cancer News, and it’s what drives Teen Cancer America and makes for an effective partnership,” said Breaking Cancer News editor-in-chief, Jamie Reno. “Our motto is, ‘Plain talk about what’s hot and hopeful in the cancer arena – for young people and anyone else who’s listening.’ That sums it up – information that is accessible and easy to understand with the goal of moving the needle on early detection.”
Created in 2016 by then-Vice President Biden during the Obama administration, the Cancer Moonshot initiative is focused on reducing the death rate from cancer by accelerating treatment discovery and innovation.
President Biden “reignited” the initiative in 2022 on the heels of major developments in cancer therapeutics, diagnostics, and other innovations in cancer. The President has established a goal for the reignited program of reducing the death rate from cancer by at least 50% over the next 25 years.
